The Iconsiam mixed-use development in Thailand is currently under construction next to the Chao Phraya River, which runs through the city of Bangkok. The project is being developed by a joint venture between Siam Piwat group, Magnolia Quality Development and Charoen Pokphand Group. It is expected to open this year.

Two residential towers are among the highlights of the project. With 52 floors and almost 269 m in height, ‘The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’ will be the shortest of the two. The other tower, ‘Magnolias Waterfront Residences’, is set to become the tallest building in Thailand, thanks to its 70 floors and the pinnacle that crowns it. Reaching 318 m in height, it will surpass the MahaNakhon tower, which is currently the tallest in Thailand at 314 m high. Main contractor on the Iconsiam project is Italian-Thai Development PLC (ITD).

To complete the residential towers, ITD counted on two luffing-jib cranes from Linden Comansa, the LCL165 and LCL190. They were supplied by Linden Comansa’s Thai distributor, Smart (1994) Co Ltd, which also carries out maintenance and services of the cranes.

\n\n

The LCL165 is working on top of The Residences at Mandarin Oriental with a maximum load capacity of 8 t. The crane was assembled with the internal climbing system and because of this, it is braced to the internal structure of the building and can be climbed easily and safely as the building grows in height.

\n\n

The LCL165 is also said to be cost saving since it only needs six tower sections, compared to 50 sections that would have been required if it was erected externally. The crane is currently finishing the installation of the crown’s cladding and will be disassembled soon.

\n\n

The Linden Comansa LCL190, with a 12-t maximum load capacity, was used at the Magnolias Waterfront Residences from January 2016 to May 2018. This crane was assembled with the external climbing system, with a final tower height of 287 m.

\n\n

In order to lift and move the loads to such heights without any problems, the LCL165 and LCL190 were fitted with optional hoist cable drums, with a capacity for 1,000 and 1,280 m respectively.

\n\n

The construction of both towers has been a challenge for ITD due to the project’s tight deadline: only 38 months from the first foundation work to the delivery to the client. This pace of work has not only required the cranes to operate for almost 20 hours a day, but also that they do so at high speeds. Therefore, the cranes were equipped with optional high-speed hoisting motors, which greatly shorten the work cycles.

The LCL190 was able to reach speeds of up to 303 m/min and the LCL165 was 310 m/min. As a result, the Magnolias Waterfront Residences could achieve a growth rate of one floor every four days, equivalent to seven floors each month.

Linden Comansa will be returning to its original name – Comansa – and use it throughout the company. This change to a single brand will be implemented gradually across the product range and at the company’s facilities in Spain, the US and China.

From now on, the cranes manufactured in Pamplona, Spain, previously marketed under the Linden Comansa brand, and cranes manufactured in Hangzhou, China, distributed under the name Comansa CM, will all be known as Comansa.

\r\n

Each crane model will keep its current name, using the letters LC or CM to indicate the product range, thus avoiding any confusion on the market. For example, the 21LC750 model indicates that it is part of the range previously known as Linden Comansa, while the 21CM550 model is a part of the former Comansa CM range.

\r\n

“After acquiring the prestigious Linden 8000 system from the Swedish company Linden in 1983, we started to apply its technical concepts throughout our range of tower cranes, therefore allowing our customers to enjoy its many obvious advantages,” said Alberto Munárriz, CEO of Comansa. “Combining the names Linden and Comansa in a single brand was initially important as we looked to open up markets, as it gave us recognition on markets where Linden had been a major player and the benefits of its products were widely appreciated.”

He added, “However, Comansa has been developing and improving this system for 35 years, and has been actively present on the market for over 50 years. The fact that we continue to be a benchmark in the tower crane industry today is not due to the name Linden in our trademark, but rather thanks to all the work we have put in over many years, allowing our products to be renowned for their quality. In fact, we are widely known on the market as Comansa, meaning the change is very natural.

\r\n

“Moreover, the company’s situation has changed a great deal over recent years, having set up in China and embarked on significant commercial expansion. This change aims to bolster our strategy at group level by having a single, uniform image on the market.”

\r\n

Excluding the name Linden from the brand does not mean that it is forgotten, stressed Mr Munárriz. “The Linden brand and system, and all they entail, are part of our DNA. In fact, Comansa is the only manufacturer whose range of horizontal jib cranes consists solely of a flat-top, pendant-free design, which was undoubtedly one of Linden’s most outstanding features,” he explained. “And, if there is one thing that characterises Comansa cranes, it is their outstanding modularity, just like Linden cranes. That is why Linden is still very much a part of the philosophy of all our products, even though it no longer appears in our brand name.”

Linden Comansa works together with its Singapore dealer, Access Systems Technology, to bring the latest tower crane development to the local market. These include the new 21LC1050, newly upgraded 21LC750 and LCL700 luffing-jib cranes.

The new 21LC1050 flat-top tower crane from Linden Comansa has three maximum capacities - 25 t, 37.5 t and 50 t - as well as a maximum jib reach of 80 m and a maximum freestanding height of 73.3 m with standard mast. The jib configurations range from 30 to 80 m, in 5 m increments. The crane’s 110 kW hoist mechanism provides a maximum speed of up to 101 m/min.

The 21LC1050 is designed based on the company’s successful model, the 21LC750. It meets the demand for heavy-capacity cranes in Singapore, said Linden Comansa, as the country’s construction sector is moving towards the use of large steel beams, heavy precast concrete elements and volumetric modules (better known as PPVC).

\r\n

At the same time, Linden Comansa’s 21LC750 flat-top crane has also been upgraded to feature larger capacities. It is now available in 25 t, 37.5 t and 50 t - increased from 24 t, 36 t and 48 t respectively.

The 21LC750 can also be climbed with a maximum 80 m jib, with jib configurations ranging from 30 to 80 m, in 5 m increments. The crane has a freestanding height of 78.8 m with standard mast.

Both the 21LC1050 and 21LC750 feature ease of erection as their ‘cat-head’ has been removed. Due to this special design, the cranes’ jib and counterjib are joined together on the turntable, without any apex section. Their standard mast sections have a width of just 2.5 m.

\r\n

The two models can be equipped with an optional 110 kW hoist motor and a hoist-drum capacity of 1,570 m of rope. They will also be fitted with the new CUBE cab. What’s more, the cranes incorporate the PowerLift system, which improves the load chart by 10% at reduced speeds, as well as the Effi-Plus system for high speed, optimum efficiency and faster working cycles.

Luffing-jib crane\r\n

\r\n

Linden Comansa’s LCL700 luffing-jib tower crane is also suitable for the Singapore market. It comes in two versions for the global market: 64 t and 50 t. These maximum capacities can be reduced to 32 t and 25 t respectively, by easily changing from a two-fall system to single pull line, thus increasing hoist speed and productivity.

\r\n

The crane provides an ideal solution in large cities and congested jobsites, where space is limited. The maximum radius of the LCL700 is 65 m, which can be reduced in increments of 5 to 30 m. The 64 t LCL700 can lift up to 7.2 t at maximum reach, while the 50 t can lift up to 7.5 t. Both cranes have a minimum reach of just 4 m.

The LCL700 boasts an ‘out-of-service’ jib radius of between 20.4 and 17 m, depending on the maximum reach, providing a higher level of safety on the construction site when the crane is not in use.

\r\n

The radius of the counterjib is also short, just 9.5 m, with the possibility of being reduced to 8.7 m by assembling the crane with steel counterweights instead of standard concrete counterweights. Despite its size, the counterjib is spaciously distributed, enabling the operator to perform maintenance tasks easily.

\r\n

The maximum freestanding mast height of the LCL700 is 69.8 m. The crane’s tower sections, with a 2.5-m wide frame, are the same as those for the luffing-jib LCL500 and the flat-top 21LC750. As such, owners of those models do not need to reinvest in new tower sections or a climbing cage.

\r\n

The LCL700 is fitted with a 200 kW hoist motor that enables it to reach high speeds: up to 134 m/min for the 64 t version, and up to 170 m/min for the 50 t. The hoist speed with maximum capacity is naturally reduced, but remains highly competitive: the 64 t LCL700 can lift 64 t with a speed of 17 m/min or 32 t with 34 m/min, while the maximum speed for the 50 t LCL700 is 22 m/min when lifting 50 t loads and 43 m/min for 25 t loads.

\r\n

Both versions of the LCL700 can feature an optional high-capacity Lebus hoist cable drum, allowing the cranes to be used to construct buildings of over 1,000 m high when using a single pull line, and over 500 m high with a double line. The LCL700 will also come with the new CUBE cab.
