Liebherr has launched a new dragline machine, the LMD 1200, specially developed for the extraction of raw materials in demanding mining applications. This new model is available globally and was unveiled at the 50th anniversary celebration of Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH in Austria, which took place from 23 to 27 June 2026.

\n\n

The LMD 1200 – Liebherr mining dragline – is suitable for wet mining (below the groundwater table) and dry mining. The boom system can be flexibly configured depending on operating environments to achieve the best possible working performance.

\n\n

The maximum lifting capacity of 30 t, with a working radius of 40 m, meets the requirements of large-scale mining applications. Thanks to its robust steel construction, the LMD 1200 is designed for continuous use in extreme weather conditions, offering reliability and durability.

\n\n

The LMD 1200 is equipped with a 670 kW engine and two 500 kN winches, shared Holger Streitz, managing director for technology and development at Liebherr-Werk Nenzing, during a press conference. He added that the machine, built for 24/7 use and low operating costs, features a boom length of 35-50 m and a high turnover of up to 850 cu m/hr.

\n\n

The dragline bucket is up to 12.25 cu m and the digging depth is up to 25 m. The Liebherr twin hydraulic motors automatically adjust the speed of the winches to match the required digging force, allowing even and efficient filling of the dragline bucket and significantly increasing handling capacity. Combined with the powerful swing gear, this results in shorter working cycles and greater productivity.

\n\n

The LMD 1200’s fairlead consists of a pivoting roller head with rope pulleys and guide rollers, as well as a bearing and an automatic positioning unit. This facilitates wear-reducing spooling of the drag rope onto the rope drum. The large rope diameter and standard grooving significantly extend the rope’s service life. The new rope lock enables quick rope changes, minimising downtime.

Flexible mobility concept

\n\n

Thanks to specially developed hydraulic components, the drivetrain is optimally designed and functionally harmonised. The combination of engine power and reduced hydraulic pressure delivers efficient operation while achieving both low fuel consumption and high handling capacity.

\n\n

According to Liebherr, the integrated tank with a capacity of 1,000 l and an 8,270 l additional tank allow the LMD 1200 to run continuously for up to one week without refuelling. The core components of the machine include a high proportion of Liebherr’s own developments, increasing parts availability and thus operational readiness.

\n\n

The LMD 1200 has an operating weight of 360 t, and its mobility concept enables it to be driven and relocated within the mine with the boom lowered, reducing time and costs for users. Liebherr said the entire machine can be assembled or disassembled in just one week.

\n\n

Driver comfort

\n\n

For driver comfort, the spacious cabin features a noise-optimised design and a clear overview of the working area. Cameras on the machine extend the operator’s field of vision and enable a safe all-round view, as well as monitoring of the rope winding on the winches.

\n\n

The tinted safety glass provides sun protection, and the air-conditioning system ensures an ideal working climate. The orthopaedic driver’s seat can be heated, cooled, or ventilated as needed. The cabin is also fitted with a second driver’s seat for practical training of new operators.

\n\n

Furthermore, an optimised lighting concept for the boom, cabin, and access ways to the machine enhances visibility during night use.

Sandvik has appointed Mats Eriksson as president of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions (SMR) business area and new member of the Sandvik Group executive management, effective 1 October 2022. He is currently president of Load and Haul, a division within Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.

\n\n

“Mats Eriksson is an experienced international leader who has successfully delivered strong results and growth for the Load and Haul division. He has also been instrumental in the development of our world-leading offering of battery-electric vehicles,” said Stefan Widing, president and CEO of Sandvik.

\n\n

“Mats Eriksson has a strong track record of developing high-performing leaders and organisations, and I am confident that he with his solid background and capabilities will be a great president of the Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions business area.”

\n\n

Mr Eriksson joined Sandvik in 2016, when he assumed the position of president of the Load and Haul division. His previous experience includes being president and CEO for two listed companies, Cencorp Oyj and Salcomp Oyj.

\n\n

Additionally, Mr Eriksson has held leading positions for several other companies, building businesses and operations in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, India, US, Brazil and South Korea.

The new DS512i rock bolter from Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is designed for 5 m x 5 m size headings combining a safe, ergonomic working environment with high levels of performance. Equipped with a completely new carrier, high-frequency rock drill, control system and ergonomic cabin, this new bolter features high levels of safety and efficiency, suitable for all rock reinforcement operations.

\n\n

The new FOPS / ROPS cabin offers a safe, comfortable working environment for the operator. This reduces noise, vibration and dust levels and improves visibility while drilling and tramming. Furthermore, the spacious and ergonomic operating environment has an interactive graphic user interface, enabling all bolting operations to be performed by a single operator in safety and comfort.

\n\n

Intelligent control systems assist during drilling, grouting and bolt tightening, delivering high levels of automation. Machine efficiency is further maximised through easy-to-access service points from ground level, allowing rapid maintenance and trouble shooting. The new DS512i comes ready for the AutoMine fleet and information management system and has multiple levels of automation, resulting in the correct choice of rig for the specific application.

\n\n

High levels of drilling performance can be ensured, thanks to the use of Sandvik RD314 high-frequency rock drill and the drilling control system which optimises drilling penetration rates. The one bolt automation function of the DS512i enhances drilling productivity and extends operating lifetime of the drilling tools.

\n\n

With up to 55% increased operator visibility and 35% higher penetration rates for greater productivity, the DS512i’s performance and safety are seamlessly combined. An upgraded bolting head comes with different bolt lengths providing an extensive bolt selection, whilst the eight-rock bolt carousel ensures that the DS512i is capable of installing different types of rock bolts ranging from 1.6 m to 6 m in length. An automatic resin shooting and cement mixing system further guarantees a high-quality rock reinforcement process.

\n\n

Able to carry a 1,200 kg cement silo, the DS512i delivers increased meshing as well as hole angle measurement and an advanced boom manipulator. Bolting head movement is further optimised with new assistive and automatic features.

\n\n

Designed specifically for tunnelling and mining, the new DS512i has been developed based on a modularised concept leading to high levels of parts commonality with the Sandvik DT922i, lowering the total cost of ownership. The bolter has been designed for the integration of subsequent actions involved in the drill and blast process.

\n\n

As well as being and ideal bolter for tunnelling, the new DS512i comes complete with certain features that make it an excellent choice for mining bolting operations. It possesses several types of bolt length and varieties within the same machine and an automatic cement mixer in parallel with automatic resin injection. Ideal for small and large headings, it enables high bolting and meshing coverage, with efficient operations being ensured through sharing high commonality of parts with other members of the 400i carrier series.

High levels of automation

\n\n

At the heart of the new DS512i are the high levels of automation. These have been developed to suit the specific needs of the customers and come in two packages: Silver and Gold.

\n\n

The Silver package comprises of ‘one bolt’ automation (collaring, drilling, grouting, bolt handling, tensioning) and hole angle measurement. The boom is fully instrumented with indicators for hole angles, tilt and rotation, as well as an advanced boom manipulator, automatic cement mixing and basic remote monitoring, amongst other features.

\n\n

The Gold package has full instrumentation and fan bolt locations to show one or more bolt fans to the specific mine or tunnel coordinates. iSURE comes as standard along with MWD, Total Station Navigation, Tele-Remote bolting, ‘planned versus actual’ bolting (which can be transferred to the control system) and full remote monitoring.

\n\n

With its many purpose designed safety features, in-built levels of efficiency for high levels of operational productivity and automation to suit, the new DS512i from Sandvik is set to provide miners and tunnellers with peace of mind in rock support.
