Construction begins on tallest building in Japan

Construction work on the Torch Tower in Tokyo, Japan, has commenced. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was recently held on 27 September 2023.

Located in the Tokyo Torch district, this new landmark building is being developed by Mitsubishi Estate Co Ltd together with its partners. Shimizu Corporation has been appointed as the project’s contractor.

According to Mitsubishi Estate, the Torch Tower will be approximately 390 m high with more than 60 floors, set to become the tallest building in Japan upon completion. It has a total floor area of 553,000 sq m.

Besides an office building, the Torch Tower will provide a retail space, an observation deck, a residential development, a hotel, and a 2,000-seat hall. These various facilities will be connected by a large plaza at the centre of the district, an aerial walkway in the low-rise area, and an outdoor space consisting of the rooftop garden attached to the walkway.

The Tokyo Torch district is a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment project occupying a site area of approximately 3.1 ha. It also features the Tokiwabashi Tower, which was completed at the end of June 2021, and the Zenigamecho Building at the end of March 2022.

The construction of Torch Tower and the substation building is scheduled to be completed at the end of March 2028, along with the Tokyo Torch Park, the large plaza at the centre of the district covering 7,000 sq m of area, marking the culmination of the long-term development stages.

Mitsubishi Estate further revealed that the Torch Tower is also designed with a number of sustainability initiatives and has received several environmental certifications.
