L&A Construction has selected Enerpac’s RCH1003 hollow plunger cylinders, combined with a P80 steel hand pump and calibrated GP10S pressure gauge to test the ground anchors used on a new eight- storey apartment block in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG). This effort aims to heighten building stability and mitigate against the risk of earthquakes, such as the magnitude 7.5 one that recently struck the country’s remote highlands region.

Local contractor Dekenai was employed to test and install the ground anchors for the new development, which is being built on a steep slope. The Enerpac RCH1003 hollow plunger cylinders used by Dekenai were supplied by Bishop Brothers, Enerpac’s distributor in PNG. These hydraulic cylinders provide versatility in testing, maintenance and tensioning applications. Their hollow plunger design allows for both pull and push forces.

Dekenai said the Enerpac hollow plunger cylinders can test loads of up to 95 t, which was important to fully test the effectiveness of the ground anchors. Highlights of the RCH-series hollow plunger cylinders include single-acting spring return, baked enamel finish for increased corrosion resistance, and collar threads for easy fixturing. The cylinders are nickel-plated, and a floating centre tube on models over 20 t can increase product life.
